1. Lahaina Breakwater

Underground Overview: Lahaina Breakwater often produces overhead surf when the rest of the coast is struggling in the knee high range. Summertime South swells filter between Kahoolawe and Lanai to produce long, grinding lefts perfect for shortboarders.

Type of wave: Fast performance right & left over sharp reef- ocassionally hollow
Best Size: Head high to three feet overhead
Best Swell Direction: S, SW, N
Best Wind Direction: NNW
Prime Time: All year, more consistent during the summer
Crowd Factor: Moderate Localism & crowds

2. Lahaina Harbor

Underground Overview: Lahaina Harbor is on the right side of the Lahaina boat channel. Summertime South swells filter between Kahoolawe and Lanai to produce long, grinding lefts perfect for shortboarders. Reef gets a little sketchy on the lower tide especially on the left bowl. Fortunitly the right is better on a lower tide, so make sure you know the tides.

Type of wave: Fast performance right & left over sharp reef- often hollow
Best Size: Head high to two feet overhead
Best Tide: Low tide is best for the Rights, while high tide is best for the Lefts.
Best Swell Direction: S, SW, N
Best Wind Direction: NNW
Prime Time: All year, more consistent during the summer
Crowd Factor: Moderate Localism & crowds

3. Honolua Bay

Underground Overview: Honolua Bay is located North of the Kapalua Golf Course. Ultimate long performance right, often hollow. When waves get over 15 ft, be weary of "the cave". The waves first peel on the outside break called Coconuts as they wind around the cove into the inside... thats where you'll find the cave. Known to devour surfboards and surfers who are in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Type of wave: Reef break Right
Best Size: 5-20 feet
Best Swell Direction: Straight West, big NW or N swell
Best Wind Direction: Light SW
Prime Time: September through April
Crowd Factor: Heavy when the waves get good

4. Honokohau

Underground Overview: Honokohau is the next bay North of Honolua, along the Honoapiilani Highway. Not nearly as crowded as Honolua Bay. So Honokohau is a great nearby alternative when the Bay is packed.

Type of wave: Fun river mouth Rights & Lefts
Best Size: 2-8 feet
Best Swell Direction: Any N swell direction
Best Wind Direction: Light SW
Prime Time: September through April
Crowd Factor: Nat as bad as Honolua bay; moderate

5. Hookipa

Underground Overview: Located off Hookipa Beach Park just past Pia on Hana Highway. Always a battle going on in the water with surfers against windsurfers. Surfers usually own the lineup from dawn until the tradeshore winds pick up... Then the windsurfers come out to play. often running the surfers out of the water. Pavilions is the shortborders peak on the East side of the bay. The cliff's besides pavillions provides shelter from the stiff afternoon tradewinds creating fairly clean conditions all day long. The West end of the bay has a break called the Point. This is usually dominated by windsurfers, but is usually surfable in the morning before the winds pick up.

Type of wave: Fast performance right & left - ocassionally hollow, mellow reef
Best Size: 2-18 feet, but Pavillions starts to close out over 6 ft.
Best Swell Direction: NW, N, NE, E, ESE
Best Wind Direction: no wind called "Kona" = glassy days
Prime Time: All year
Crowd Factor: gets packed at Pavilions with surfers and the Point with windsurfers.

6. Honomanu

Underground Overview: Honomanu is located between Kaumahina State Park and Keanae. Just before Keanae as the Hana Highway finally turns back to the coast, at the bottom of a hairpin turn take the short dirt road to the river mouth. You can see the waves from this point on. Not a world class wave, but there are usually no crowds, good waves, with a beautiful tropical bay surrounding.

Type of wave: Rivermouth Lefts and cliffside Rights - occasionally hollow
Best Tide: Gets hollow on a lower tide
Best Size: Anywhere 3-10 ft
Best Swell Direction: N, NE, E, ESE
Best Wind Direction: W
Prime Time: Breaks all year
Crowd Factor: pretty mellow
