| SURF REPORTS | Hawaii,
Oahu - North shore |
|
|
1. Army Beach
 |
Underground
Overview: Army Beach is the place to go if you want
to surf the North shore without the crowds. This is a very
tempermental surf break. The wind is usually stiff onshore,
so you'll need to wait until the wind goes offshore (Southwest
or West) to catch it just right. Army Beach is located off
Farrington Highway across from Dillingham Airfield... just
minutes West from Haleiwa. |
Type
of wave: Fast hollow Left
Best Tide: Mid to high tide
Best Size: 5-8 ft
Best Swell Direction: NW, WNW
Best Wind Direction: SW, W

2. Mokuleia Beach
Park
 |
Underground
Overview: Mokuleia Beach Park is another uncrowded
North shore Oahu break. Mokuleia has public showers, restrooms,
camping, oceanfront parking and uncrowded waves. Sound too
good to be true?? here's the cons: fickle surf conditions,
exposed razor sharp reef on a lower tide and it closes out
over 8 ft. But hey, it's not crowded! |
Type
of wave: Fast performance Right - Gets hollow at
times
Best Tide: Mid to High Tide
Best Size: 3-8 ft -- closes out
over 8ft
Best Swell Direction: NW, N, NE
Best Wind Direction: W

April

3. Haleiwa
 |
Underground
Overview: Haleiwa can be a bit decieving from the
shoreline. The main break is about 300 yards off offshore
with a bowling hard right in a series of thick sections
to an eventual closeout known as "Toilet Bowl".
Haleiwa's wave is intensified by a fast-moving rip current
that sucks water from the Avalanche flushout which races
right across the outer edges of Haleiwa's reef. At times,
especially on bigger days, it can feel like you're riding
a river. |
Type
of wave: Fast performance Right, often hollow, shorter
Left
Best Tide: Medium Tide
Best Size: 6-10 ft
Best Swell Direction: WNW, NW
Best Wind Direction: Light Trade
winds
Prime Time: September through
April

4. Puaena Point
 |
Underground Overview: Puaena
Point is located on the East end of Haleiwa Beach Park.
Puaena Point offers parking, camping, showers, and restrooms.
Puaena Point provides a manageable, more controlled, wave
when most other North shore surf breaks are too gnarly.
Although it juts out into the open ocean at the Norhteast
tip of Waialua Bay, the reef points at just the right angle
to calm the raging swell.
|
Type
of wave: Fast, Hollow right, sporadic Lefts
Best Tide: Medium Tide
Best Size: 6-12 ft
Best Swell Direction: WNW, NW,
N... NW is Best though
Best Wind Direction: Light trade

5. Himalayas
 |
Underground
Overview: Moving southward from Jacksonville Beach,
is St. Augustine Beach. This is the best/closest beach to
Gainesville's University of Florida, so a large population
of traveling surfers travel here. The main breaks include
Anastasia Beach Park's: The Entrance, Middles, and Blowhole.
There are a few less-popular spots (The Gate Station) on
the perimeter that are also worth checking, as well. |

high to three feet overhead

6. Jocko's
 |
Underground
Overview: New Smyrna Beach is best on east and south
swells with the incoming tide; however, it works on most
anything and can actually magnify the size a bit. It may
be one foot along the beach, but right next to the inlet
it may be three times the size. South swells suck here,
so don't bother, and at low tide, it's not as good, as it
breaks on the far outside sandbar called Shark Shallows.
Oh yeah, there are tons of sharks! |
Type
of wave: Sand Bar - Rights & Lefts
Best Tide: high tide
Best Size: Anywhere from knee
to head high
Best Swell Direction: NE, E
Best Wind Direction: W
Prime Time: Best during fall and
winter, but this is one of FL's most consistent breaks
Crowd Factor: Hardcore

8. Waimea Bay
 |
Underground
Overview: Indialantic's Boardwalk is halfway between
Sebastian Inlet and Cocoa Beach. The boardwalk is easy to
find, thanks to the stoplight and Shagg's Surf Shop, which
is perched on A1A at the north end of the beach park. You
have to pay to park legally, so make sure you have some
quarters. |

9. Pipeline
 |
Underground
Overview: Sebastian Inlet can get crazy crowded;
you can also surf it alone. Overall, Sebastian Inlet is
a great consistent wave, and everybody knows about it...
so you have to be respectful to the masses. If you decide
to surf First Peak, Be weary of who you drop in on. $3.25
daily park access fee required. |

10. Rocky Point
 |
Underground
Overview: North Jetty is on the north side of the
Fort Pierce Inlet. Ft. Pierce has a number of peaks that
break up and down the beach, and a good bowl that breaks
right up against the jetty. Good lefts break off the south
side of the inlet on huge swells, but it's a very rare occurrence.
More of a longboarding wave, but there are still some fun
shortboard waves mixed in there. |

Best Size: Chest high to two feet
overhead
Best Swell Direction: N, NE, SE,

11. Backyards
 |
Underground
Overview: Jupiter Inlet is one of the few good rights
in South Florida; it's just a little hard to find. Take
Indiantown Road until it runs into A1A, then turn north.
The park is on the far north end of the island, but you
must veer right off A1A at the Circle K, the turn-off is
marked, and follow a two-lane road around to the northeast.
The surf is directly in front of the restroom facilities. |
Type
of wave: Wedgy sand bar
Best Tide: Low to incoming tide
Best Size: Head high to overhead
Best Swell Direction: NNE swell

Underground
Overview: Juno Pier isn't really a big wave spot,
but it can hold some size. At head-high, the waves are very
lined-up and under control. There is a midsection that usually
connects, and the inside is steep and fast. Windswell breaks
best on the inside, but the better onshore break is on the
pier's north side. Juno Beach Pier breaks best during the
incoming tide. |
